Replacement Supports:

Items That May Be Considered for Participants

In some specific circumstances, there are items that are not typically covered as NDIS supports

but can be considered as replacement supports for participants.

Below, we outline these replacement supports, the specific circumstances under which they may be considered, and their proposed support categories.

Day to Day Living Replacement Supports

Standard Commercially Available Household Items

Specific Circumstances the Support May Be Considered for Replacement:

Standard commercially available household items may be considered replacement supports under specific circumstances, including:

  • There is clear evidence that the need for the item relates specifically to the participant's impairment, meeting the disability or early intervention requirements.
  • The item must increase whole-task independence and reduce or eliminate the need for a support worker or disability-specific assistive technology.

Proposed Support Category:

  • Consumables
  • Assistive Technology

Smart Watches, Tablets, Smartphones, and Apps for Accessibility/Communication Purposes

Specific Circumstances the Support May Be Considered for Replacement:

Smart devices such as watches, tablets, and smartphones can be considered replacement supports for participants who require these items for communication and accessibility needs, including:

  • Participants with complex communication needs who use a tablet as an alternative communication device. If the device is the participant's only means of communication, it cannot be shared, and it must be the most appropriate solution for their needs.
  • Note: Any smart device used for tracking purposes could be considered a restrictive practice, and this should be considered in this context.

Proposed Support Category:

  • Consumables
  • Assistive Technology
